Flathead Lake Boat Launch

Every day brings change on the lake and you never know where the lake trout will be but these are some of the fishing reports we receive and we pass them on as suggestions. Remember to watch the weather patterns. Be aware of cloud formations and wind. Make sure you have the right safety equipment on board.

Best lake trout catches have been reported in these areas:

Blue Bay - Fishing off the point is good for lake trout. Also seeing whitefish coming in from this area.

Big Arm Bay - Lake trout off the point.

Painted Rocks - Jigging & trolling-trolling seems to be working the best right now.

Cedar Island & Shelter Island - Trolling this area and some jigging has been very good.

Mouth of the River - Jigging and trolling

Best lures/baits for lake trout have been:

White jigs with some bright green on them-rattle disaster jigs-use cut bait with some artificial scent of some kind on it. Change your bait often.

Best lake whitefish catches
have been reported in these areas:

Skidoo Bay - Whitefish have been hitting in 50-60 ft

Big Arm Bay - Some days just out from the dock are good 50-60 ft.

Cromwell Island - Producing nice catches of whitefish off the points.

Goose Island - Some have good luck around it.

Narrows - Reports are that nice whitefish are being caught there.

Best lures/baits for lake whitefish have been:

Green rattle disasters-most anglers aren’t even using maggots but to improve your chances you may want them on board.

General Comments: Nice perch are out there in the shallower bays of Big Arm, Elmo, Cromwell Is.

Anglers-be sure and know how to identify bull trout. It is your responsibility to know the differences between the lake trout and the bulls. If you are in doubt-throw it back. The smaller bulls are harder to ID and you have to look closely. The easiest way to tell what you have is to look at the tail. A lake trout’s tail is deeply forked. A bull trout’s tail is slightly forked if it’s forked at all. Also, if there are no black spots on the dorsal fin you probably have a bull. There can be some black coloring but no black spots. Remember-if you don’t know, let it go.
